US News and World Report Badge for Pulmonary MedicineThe Pulmonary Function Laboratory brings together state-of-the-art testing equipment and the largest team of pediatric pulmonary specialists of any hospital in California to confidently diagnose and treat infants, kids and teens with any lung or breathing conditions.

Diagnostic services and tests include:

  • Comprehensive pulmonary function diagnostic testing, with or without bronchodilator evaluation
    • Spirometry (FVC, SVC, MVV)
    • Respiratory mechanics (MIP/MEP)
    • RAW: airway resistance
    • TGV: Thoracic gas volume/lung volume (plethysmography and/or nitrogen washout)
    • Diffusing capacity (DLco — single breath)
  • Bronchial provocation studies (cold air, exercise, methacholine)
  • Exercise physiology/cardiopulmonary exercise test
  • Indirect calorimetry study
  • Esophageal pH/impedance study
  • Hypoxic challenge test
  • Six-minute walk
  • Actigraphy activity level monitoring
  • FeNO testing 
  • Patient training/education
    • Airway clearance training (ACT), specifically oscillating positive expiratory pressure (OPEP) therapy systems, CPT, and autogenic drainage
    • Metered-dose inhaler (with spacer) training for patients of all ages
    • Positive airway pressure mask fitting/acclimation training (CPAP and bi-level)

We also offer diagnostic services to help children get a good night’s sleep, including:

  • Baseline polysomnography
  • Positive airway pressure (PAP) titration
  • Ventilator titration
  • MSLT (multiple sleep latency test)
