AYA Cancer Care Model

The Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Cancer team utilizes a multidisciplinary care model focused on providing each patient a holistic and tailored approach as they prepare for, experience, and recover from treatment. This model includes eight core elements:

AYA Care Model Goals

• Cancer Treatment: Provide state-of-the-art cancer services to patients, with a focus on enrolling patients on clinical trials and maximizing qualify of life during and after treatment.
• Adolescent and Internal Medicine: Deliver tailored general medical services to each individual patient, engaging local primary care providers as appropriate.
• Supportive Care: Ensure all patients receive personalized supportive services including spiritual care, acupuncture, dietary & nutrition support, reiki, yoga, pilates, and mindfulness classes.
• Recreational Therapy: Provide all patients with hospital and community-related options for peer support and getting involved in affinity groups.
• Fertility and Reproductive Health: Provide appropriate family planning, sexual health and fertility preservation services, including body image services.
• Psychology and Psychiatry: Help patients understand how psychology and psychiatry services may complement their care, as well as provide coordination for these services.
• Pain Management: Ensure all patients understand and have easily accessible pain management services, including non-pharmacologic symptom management such as acupuncture and hypnosis.
• Palliative Care: Deliver consultations and provide holistic support for patients in both medical and personal decision decision-making, which includes school, career, and spiritual planning, as well as family support and end-of-life planning.
